EASTERN RAILWAY MALDA DIVISION ENHANCES SAFETY BY CLOSING UNAUTHORIZED TRESPASSING NEAR GANKAR RAILWAY STATION

The Malda Division of Eastern Railway has successfully closed an unauthorized trespassing near Gankar Railway Station on the New Farakka – Azimganj section. This decisive action follows the construction of a road under bridge (RUB) nearby, designed to facilitate the safe movement of road vehicles and pedestrians in the area.
Despite the availability of the newly constructed RUB, local inhabitants continued to risk their lives by using the unauthorized crossing, jeopardizing their safety and that of the train movements. In response, divisional authorities and branch officers engaged with the local community to educate them on the dangers of such unauthorized trespassing and to encourage the use of the road under bridge (RUB).
To address the concerns and demands of the local population, the divisional authorities swiftly sanctioned and executed several key improvements. These improvement works included:
*Widening of the Road*: Enhancing the road capacity to better accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
*Proper Lighting Arrangements*: Installing adequate lighting to ensure visibility and safety during night hours.
*Waterlogging Prevention Arrangements*: Implementing measures to prevent water accumulation in the subway (RUB), ensuring it remains usable in all weather conditions.
The prompt execution of these improvements built trust among the local residents, who agreed to the closure of the 12-year-old unauthorized trespassing site. The effective relationship management by the Railway authorities, in collaboration with the local inhabitants and civil authorities, culminated in the official closure on June 23, 2024.
To reinforce the closure, fencing was erected over a span of 75 meters on one side and 25 meters on the other side of the trespassing area. This intervention has significantly enhanced safety for school children, villagers, and elderly persons, who can now safely utilize the underpass without the risk of accidents.
The elimination of this unauthorized crossing has not only safeguarded the lives of the local community but also ensured seamless Railway movement in the area.
